Join us at a vigil for brother Douglas Schifter, a black car driver pushed to suicide by financial desperation
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6th @ 2:00 PM
CITY HALL (CENTRE STREET/PARK ROW ENTRANCE)
SPREAD THE WORD. Tomorrow NYTWA drivers will gather to honor brother Douglas Schifter, a fellow driver who took his life because he was facing financial ruin.
The NY Post reported on Douglas’ suicide and the note he wrote before his death:
“Now the politicians have flooded the streets with unlimited cars and some 3,000 new ones every month still coming. There is not enough work for everybody that pays a living,” [Douglas] Schifter posted around 4:30 a.m.
“This is SLAVERY NOW. … I don’t know how else to try to make a difference other than a public display of a most private affair.”
Douglas was the third NYC driver we know of to commit suicide in as many months. In 21 years of organizing, I have never seen drivers in such crisis.
Together we will continue to fight back against the Wall Street greed that is destroying the lives of so many drivers. You are not alone.
Please join us tomorrow to show support and solidarity.
