El Barrio Dreams: Food, Art, Culture (and Change)

Join the Street Vendor Project for a free community walking tour of East Harlem that includes stories about the past and present of La Marqueta, New York City’s oldest public market; samples from vendors at Vendy Plaza; and stops at La Casa de Las Velas Botanica, Chenchita’s Angels Community Garden, murals, and other sites that illuminate the neighborhood’s dynamic cultural landscape. The tour is offered in conjunction with Vendy Plaza, a seasonal open-air market in East Harlem where vendors from a wide range of cultural backgrounds sell food and crafts on Sunday afternoons. The tour and Vendy Plaza are both organized by the Street Vendor Project, a grassroots organization that helps New York City street vendors defend their rights, improve their working conditions, and grow their businesses. We’ll meet at the information desk at Vendy Plaza, which is located on 116th Street and Park Avenue, under the elevated Metro North tracks. This tour is free but space is limited. Advance registration strongly encouraged. Spanish language interpretation will be provided as needed. Click here to sign up!
