The New York Federation successfully launched the inaugural 2015 Delfino Leadership Institute on May 16 & 17. We had over 20 worker leaders from across New York City participate in a movement building and organizing training. The Delfino Leadership Institute works to create leaders from the bottom up, striving towards an immigrant worker movement led by workers themselves. The Institute was named after Delfino Velasquez, a day laborer killed on the job in Staten Island. Delfino’s daughter, Monica, is participating in the training Institute and says she is proud to have her father remembered like this and knows that this program will create more leaders to stop more deaths from happening.
The Federation is a collective effort led by the Street Vendor Project, El Centro del Inmigrante, New Immigrant Community Empowerment, Laundry Workers Centers, DRUM South Asian Worker Center, Cidadao Global, and Enlace. Click here for more info
